A vibrant new tableware and interior collection, born of a collaboration between two iconic Finnish design brands, Arabia and Vuokko, will launch in early April 2025. This collection combines designer Vuokko Nurmesniemi's distinctive, bold, and colourful print designs with Arabia's streamlined tableware and home products. Additionally, the collection includes a rare glass vase that Nurmesniemi originally designed during her collaboration with the Nuutajärvi glass factory in the 1950s.

The Finnish tableware and interior design brand Arabia unveils this new collection, merging its home products with the striking print patterns and rare glass design of esteemed Finnish designer Vuokko Nurmesniemi.

The cheerful Arabia X Vuokko collection, celebrating Arabia's and Nurmesniemi's shared design philosophies of clean, timeless aesthetics, will be available from April 2025. The collection features Nurmesniemi's spectacular prints on Arabia's tableware and home products, alongside a rare vase designed by Nurmesniemi. The range includes ceramic dishes, a tray, glass vases, and napkins.

Master of striking patterns and airy lines

Vuokko Nurmesniemi's contributions as a fabric print designer and pioneer of Finnish design have left an indelible mark both domestically and internationally. Known for her innovative use of striking and colourful prints and architectural lines, she played a significant role in shaping Finland’s design language.

Nurmesniemi first gained recognition in the 1950s and 1960s through her work for the Finnish brand Marimekko. In 1964, she founded her own company, Vuokko Oy. From 1965 onwards, Nurmesniemi concentrated on three core geometric patterns in her designs: stripes, squares, and circles. She was particularly noted for her bold use of primary colours and favoured simple, architectural lines and airy cuts in her clothing designs, allowing her patterns to take centre stage.

The Arabia X Vuokko collection showcases three original prints created by Nurmesniemi for Vuokko Oy: the speckled, yellow-based Kraklee (1964); the playful Pieni 4-raita (Small 4 stripes) (1973), one of Vuokko Oy's best-known stripe patterns; and the vibrant, pink-red 2-väri (2 colours) (1974). The collection meticulously adapts these prints, originally designed for fabrics, to its objects, replicating the smallest details like the slight intentional overlaps in colour areas.

The range includes a mug, a plate, and a bowl in all three prints. The shapes are based on Arabia's classic BK model, originally designed by Birger Kaipiainen and also featured in Arabia's Paratiisi series. Complementary items include a plywood tray adorned with the 2-väri print and paper napkins featuring the Pieni 4-raita design.

Vuokko Nurmesniemi's glass design

In the 1950s, Vuokko Nurmesniemi collaborated with the Nuutajärvi glass factory at designer Kaj Franck's invitation, creating unique glassworks that were displayed at Arabia's Eteläesplanadi store and recognised at the Milan Triennale. The Arabia X Vuokko collection includes a rare glass vase designed by Nurmesniemi during this period.

This mouth-blown vase is rounded with a slender neck, standing 180 mm tall, and is ideal for a few flowers or branches. It is available in three colours: clear, light pink, and light green.

Vuokko Nurmesniemi

Born in 1930, Vuokko Nurmesniemi graduated as a ceramicist from the University of Applied Sciences in Helsinki in 1952. Despite her training in ceramics, she is best known for her interior textiles, clothing fabrics, and the spectacular, graphic, and colourful prints she created for them, as well as her clean-lined clothing designs that allowed her prints to shine.

Her extensive body of work made Nurmesniemi a pioneer in textile and clothing design and a key figure in promoting Finnish and Nordic design internationally. Nurmesniemi has remarked that her training as a ceramicist significantly influenced her work, particularly in developing a three-dimensional visualisation ability.

Nurmesniemi’s connection with Arabia began in 1945, when, at the age of 15, she worked as a summer trainee cutting paper patterns used to create dish designs.
